Like many family households, we have a dog.
A gloriously gigantic, white fluffy dog named Hess.
Hess is a type of dog called a Great Pyrenees — which means she’s technically classified as a working breed. She excels at guarding our livestock and small farm, she likes having something to do. She also has the patience of a saint when it comes to our two kids, and is really great at being a good dog.
Like any good dog, with little kids, she has a tough job. As her owner, sometimes I feel bad that she might’ve had two breakfasts because there are multiple little helpers wanting to give her a scoop. Or maybe I actually forgot? She definitely ate some goldfish crackers off the ground so that has to count for something. I know she’s been outside at least 12 times today, following the kids in and out, but I can’t tell you when she actually went out last because she he has a tremendous self-afflicted responsibility to stick right by the kids and continues to be a good dog. While I try my best to be a good mom.
She’s got glitter in her fur, bikes to chase, chickens to corral, chalk on her paws, crumbs to clean. Phew! I’m tired just thinking about all the work it takes to be a family dog. No wonder she sleeps so soundly amongst a heap of Barbies piled in her dog bed.
I sure hope she knows how much I appreciate rarely having to clean a spill. Or how her giant white body is a good spotlight in the field so I always know where my kids are if they’re playing farther away. Her companionship in the kitchen is a fixture in our home. If you too have a family dog, I’m sure they have a fond place in all your hearts.
