Play-Dough for Dinner

Happy first day of September, MiniBury!

As soon as that first cool night hits, my kitchen calls to me.

Not the dirty dishes though, those can hush up.

But as an accomplished home cook, my family sees me handle many kinds of food, as well as food-adjacent things. But my 5-year-old is particularly drawn to dough like a moth to a flame.

I try to involve both of my kids as much as possible. So help me, they’re going to be able to cook. But cooking with kids is not as glamorous as it sounds when you’re just trying to get dinner on the table.

Here I’m sharing my own personal play-doh recipe. From time to time, I like to make a batch as a distraction. That way they feel involved but the stakes are much lower.

Homemade Play-Dough

2 cups of flour
1 tbs cream of tartar
1/2 cup of salt
1 tbs cooking oil
1 cup warm water

Put it all in a bowl and mix it together, or have the kids do that themselves. It makes an off white color, very similar to bread dough. But you can add an instant Kool-Aid packet to make it fragrant and colorful. Or, some food coloring, perhaps? Although this is technically edible it’s gonna be really salty and you may not want anyone to eat it.

I hope you’ve all had a great start to school and we love hearing from you! So if you get the chance, send us your kitchen tips and tricks! We’re always looking for new ways to include the kids.

Enjoy!
