Teaching Toileting Skills to Young Learners
This workshop will identify the typical milestones of acquiring toilet skills, and how to support young children
in reaching these goals. We will discuss the progression of skill development, the age ranges these skills are
typically mastered, and potential variations within these guidelines. Participants will gain insights into strategies
to address variations, including use of age-appropriate language, visual supports, nutrition, schedules,
structuring the environment, and behavioral supports. Most importantly, we will explore avenues to gain the
child’s interest and investment in moving towards independence in using the bathroom. There will be time for
discussion and questions/answers, and for participants to share struggles and successes.
Presenter Deb Sharpe is an Occupational Therapist with over 35 years of experience working with children
